Following months of displacement, many families have begun returning to their communities despite ongoing insecurity and recurring hostilities in parts of the country.

As of early August, over 834,000 people have returned to their areas of origin, while approximately 353,000 people remain displaced across Lebanon.

Around 22,800 internally displaced people continue to reside in collective shelters. Humanitarian needs remain significant despite the large-scale returns. Many returnees are returning to damaged homes and continue to face challenges accessing basic services and livelihoods.

Key stats

  • 2.99 million people need humanitarian assistance, of which 1.06 million are children
  • 4,335 deaths and 12,277  injuries recorded (since 2 March)
  • Over 1 million displaced as of early July

What’s happening in Lebanon right now?

A fragile ceasefire remains in place following the renewed truce of 19-20 June 2026. However, hostilities continue, with repeated airstrikes, shelling, demolitions and military activity reported across southern Lebanon.

In early August, the Israeli military issued its first displacement order in nearly a month for the town of Mansouri in Tyre district, triggering the displacement of at least 130 families. Daily shelling and airstrikes were reported in and around Mansouri between 3 and 10 August.

The security situation further deteriorated over the past week, with a significant escalation of strikes across southern Lebanon, including in Nabatieh governorate. On 15-16 August, Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed at least 11 people, including children. The renewed violence has resulted in additional displacement, and increased protection concerns for civilians in affected areas.

Following months of displacement people have started returning despite ongoing insecurity situation.

As of early August, more than 834,000 people had returned to their areas of origin, while approximately 353,000 people remain displaced across Lebanon. Around 22,800 internally displaced people continue to reside in collective shelters.

Many returnees are finding their homes damaged or destroyed and continue to face limited access to electricity, water, healthcare and other essential services. Damage to critical infrastructure, including water and electricity networks, continues to restrict access to basic services, particularly in South and Nabatieh governorates.

The humanitarian situation remains critical, with ongoing protection risks, renewed displacement, extensive infrastructure damage, and significant gaps in essential services continuing to affect communities across the country.
