A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has devastated huge areas of Myanmar.

At least 3,000 people have died, and many people are still missing. Many more have no access to the safe shelter, clean water, food and medical care they need to survive.

The UK Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), of which Islamic Relief Worldwide is a member, is launching an appeal to support those impacted by the disaster.

Search and rescue efforts are underway. Myanmar has declared a state of emergency, with authorities requesting international assistance.

Countless roads and buildings have been destroyed, including hospitals, schools and water supplies. Network and power lines are down. People are cut off from vital services.

Myanmar was already facing a severe humanitarian crisis with a third of the population in need of humanitarian aid. Now the situation is catastrophic.

Islamic Relief is responding

Islamic Relief is working with partners on the ground to reach and support affected communities. We are liaising with fellow UK-based humanitarian agencies and local organisations we have partnered with previously to assess the scale of the disaster and needs of those affected.

Funds have been set aside for an initial response, separate to the DEC appeal, which will provide people with lifesaving shelter, and cash so they can buy food, water and other vital supplies.

The humanitarian situation in Myanmar

Myanmar was already facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with more than 19 million people – over a third of the population – in need of aid. One in 4 people already did not have enough to eat.

The disaster comes at a time when many humanitarian organisations operating in Myanmar have been impacted by funding cuts. Myanmar is subject to sanctions, with humanitarian exemptions in place.

Now the situation is even more critical, and survivors urgently need support.

Please help the people of Myanmar. Donate to the DEC Myanmar Earthquake Appeal.
