Islamic Relief is calling for donations to support communities affected by devastating flooding in Morocco.

In mid-December, flash floods swept through the coastal province of Safi after heavy rains, killing at least 37 people.

Early February brought more flooding to the country’s north with rivers bursting their banks and dams releasing water after weeks of heavy rain. More than 140,00 people have been relocated from flood-prone areas in northern provinces including Larache, Kenitra, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane and Tetouan, and at least 4 fatalities have been confirmed.

Islamic Relief is assessing the situation in north Morocco

Access to flood affected areas is currently restricted, while infrastructure damage, landslides and high-water levels continue to limit mobility.

Islamic Relief’s local partner Al Mobadara is gathering and verifying information with the aim of planning a response. This will likely involve providing aid to meet urgent needs such as food, blankets and mattresses for displaced families. Our priority remains ensuring that the most vulnerable families receive timely and dignified assistance.

Government agencies are continuing evacuations and rescue operations, while working to reinforce riverbanks. Weather alerts remain in place, with more flooding expected.

Islamic Relief is supporting recovery efforts in Safi

In the first days and weeks after the disaster in Safi, Islamic Relief worked closely with a trusted local partner to support communities affected by the flooding.

We provided food packs, hygiene kits and other essential items to 312 families, helping more than 1,300 individuals meet their most urgent needs and maintain their dignity.

Now, we are closely monitoring the situation and following up with affected families, particularly in the Safi region. Our team remains in regular contact with communities and local partners, assessing evolving needs and identifying gaps in assistance. Based on these assessments, families may be included in upcoming Ramadan food distributions if food insecurity remains one of their most pressing needs during the holy month.
