Across the globe, many families are forced to choose between empty stomachs or freezing nights. For millions of people already suffering from displacement, sickness and poverty, winter is a frightening prospect.

In Gaza and Lebanon especially, hundreds of thousands of people face a brutal winter in makeshift shelters, not knowing where their next meal will be coming from.

In Afghanistan, where half the population is in need of humanitarian assistance, temperatures can drop as low as -25°C. Sub-zero temperatures bring misery to the many families living in rundown homes in Kosova, where millions of people require medical assistance; while in Syria, more than a decade of crisis has devastated the healthcare system and left millions of people with no access to medicine, safe sanitation or permanent shelter. 

As the winter months approach, Islamic Relief is once again preparing to deliver essential items to families on the edge of survival.

In 2025, Islamic Relief delivered winter essentials to over 178,900 people, helping them survive the winter.

Our annual Winterisation Programme has long provided blankets, heating materials (fuel, firewood, wood stoves and olive pomace) and food to help families endure the coldest months. Now, cash is becoming an increasingly vital form of support.

In Bosnia, Albania and Kosova, we cover the energy bills of families in need to help ease the burden of higher bills in winter and the rising cost of living.

In places such as Yemen, Türkiye and Lebanon, we provide cash vouchers that families can use to buy winter clothes from selected suppliers.

In 2025, our winter food drive coincided with Ramadan, during which we distributed 7,300 food packs, reaching over 21,000 people. We also provided 4,800 iftar meals and supported over 2,700 children with Eid gifts, bringing the total number of people reached to over 36,000.
