Donate to Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country of strength and spirit, yet millions of people face hardship caused by poverty, climate disasters and displacement.

Despite an impressive growing economy in the last few decades, widespread inequality, political instability and recurring emergencies threaten the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities.

This is exacerbated for those living in rural areas or overcrowded urban regions, as the country holds one of the highest population densities in the world.

Bangladesh is also home to one of the world’s largest refugee settlements. Since 2017, over 1.1 million Rohingya refugees have fled violence in Myanmar and now live in overcrowded camps around Cox’s Bazar.

Today, 14.2 million people in Bangladesh are in need of humanitarian assistance (UNFPA, 2024).

Islamic Relief has been working in Bangladesh since 1991, supporting communities through natural disaster, instability and health challenges. Thanks to your donations, we can deliver lifesaving aid and long-term support to people across Bangladesh who need it the most.

The rising threat of floods in Bangladesh

Flooding is one of the most devastating and frequent disasters in Bangladesh, and each year it’s exacerbated by climate change and rising sea levels.

Every year, millions of people are affected by flash floods, riverbank erosion and landslides.

In August 2024, more than 5 million people were impacted as eastern Bangladesh saw its worst floods in three decades. Hundreds of thousands were displaced as homes were destroyed, crops were washed away, and critical infrastructure was damaged.

With nearly 80% of Bangladesh being classed as floodplains, the floods can displace entire communities and threaten food security for many.

Your Bangladesh flood donations help Islamic Relief prepare communities in Bangladesh for future disasters, build climate-resilient livelihoods and respond in emergencies when it’s needed the most.

Why Bangladesh needs your donations

Climate change, overpopulation and severe poverty has left many communities in Bangladesh struggling with everyday life.

Around 1 in 4 people

live below the poverty line (World Bank, 2024).

Almost 40% of children under five

are stunted due to malnourishment (WFP, FAO).

38% of women

are married before the age of 18, with 18% marrying before the age of 15 (UN Women, 2023).

Islamic Relief’s work in Bangladesh

Since 1991, Islamic Relief has been a lifeline for vulnerable communities in Bangladesh, responding to emergencies and helping communities to build safer futures.

Thanks to your donations, we are helping communities withstand disasters, breaking the cycle of poverty and providing opportunities for work.

Protecting lives from the impact of floods

Through your donations, we’re able to respond swiftly when floods strike Bangladesh, delivering essential aid and restoring dignity in communities repeatedly hit by rising waters.

In flood-prone areas like Bhabadaha, we’ve built elevated flood-resistant latrines with bases rising above the highest flood line. These offer safe and private sanitation for people living in waterlogged conditions due to man-made drainage failures.

We restore safety, health and dignity to rightsholders who have lived without access to proper facilities for years.

In response to the floods in 2024, your donations helped us distribute food supplies, hygiene kits and cash assistance to thousands of people, helping displaced families buy essential items such as food, water and shelter.

Supporting Rohingya refugees

Since 2017, Islamic Relief has been delivering humanitarian aid and support for Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) and the host communities around Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char.

Our efforts have included distributing monthly food rations, clean water, hygiene kits, winter clothes and sanitation services to communities in need.

We have also constructed Water, Health and Sanitation (WASH) facilities in settlements, installed tube wells, provided educational sessions to children, constructed shelters, and distributed essential non-food items such as LPG cannisters for heating and cooking.

Through these initiatives, Islamic Relief not only addresses immediate needs but also strengthens community resilience, ensures dignity, and provides opportunities for Rohingya families to survive and thrive despite prolonged displacement.

Building climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods

Islamic Relief is helping communities across Bangladesh adapt to climate change and prepare for disasters through locally led, inclusive and sustainable solutions.

Through our Islamic Climate Resilience Alliance (ICRA) project, we offer Self-Help Groups (SHG), empowering villagers – especially women – to share resources and knowledge, learn about financial management and access interest-free emergency loans to help them open small businesses and break free from debt.

We set up workshops and support for families living in poverty, helping them adapt to climate change and disaster.

We also help marginalised families improve their farming, livelihoods and bolster their resilience to climate change through offering training in kitchen gardening, distributing seeds, saplings, and organic fertiliser, and running demonstrations to boost crop yields.

Your donations are helping communities strengthen their resilience to climate change and build a more secure future.

Promoting employment and economic growth

Together, we are also helping vulnerable communities across Bangladesh build brighter futures.

In Dhaka, we are working with vulnerable Bihari communities who live in cramped settlement camps and struggle to find formal work. Through our youth employment project, 400 young people are receiving vocational and technical training to build the skills they need to earn a stable income.

Our youth employment project in Dhaka provides skills sessions to upskill vulnerable communities.

The project also offers psychosocial counselling, awareness of health and hygiene, and life skills development,

By opening doors to dignified work, your donations are helping young people overcome hardship and become more independent.

With your support, we’re helping families through crisis, poverty and the effects of climate change. Donate to Bangladesh to help save lives today.
