Fathers and sons stood in rubble

Sudan is a country rich in history and culture – but even before the recent war, for years it has been marked by hunger, poverty and displacement.

From escalating tensions and economic instability to the impacts of climate change, famine and chronic underdevelopment, life for millions of Sudanese people has been shaped by hardship.

Three years on from the start of the war in April 2023, Sudan is now facing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Today, more than 33 million people are struggling to survive. Access to food, healthcare, education and safe water remains a daily struggle for many, especially in rural and conflict-affected areas.

Islamic Relief has been working in Sudan since 1984, providing life-saving aid and long-term development support to vulnerable communities.

A deepening hunger crisis

Famine has long been a devastating reality in Sudan, with Islamic Relief’s first ever project launched in 1984 to help people affected by hunger. Today, the country is facing one of the world’s worst hunger crises, driven by a brutal conflict that continues to tear communities apart.

The ongoing crisis has displaced millions, as children and families are starving. Malnutrition is rising. More than 24 million people – nearly half of Sudan’s population – are facing acute shortages of food.

Armed groups have forced farmers and communities from their land, destroyed markets, looted food and supplies for malnourished children, and systematically obstructed humanitarian aid. Famine has been declared in multiple regions, including El Fasher in North Darfur, where communities remain under siege, cut off from humanitarian aid and basic necessities.

Without urgent aid, famine will keep spreading, putting millions more at risk.

Why Sudan needs your donation

From years of conflict and natural disasters, Sudan is suffering from one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises:

More than 9 million people

are displaced within the country (IOM) and more than 4 million people have fled Sudan to neighbouring countries (Islamic Relief UK, March 2026).

An estimated 6.9 million

people are currently at risk of gender-based violence (UN Women, December 2024).

Cholera death rates

are triple the global average (Save the Children, October 2024).

Islamic Relief’s work in Sudan

Since 1984, Islamic Relief has been a lifeline for communities in Sudan.

From responding to famine to building schools and providing emergency aid amid conflict, our work has empowered vulnerable communities for over four decades.

Despite escalating conflict and growing humanitarian challenges, we continue to provide lifesaving aid and support across the country.

Emergency response and nutrition

Islamic Relief has played a key role in delivering urgent food and humanitarian aid such as water and clothing in Sudan during times of crisis.

Several of our earliest projects in the country focused on easing suffering, including a nutrition programme supporting an orphanage, which was funded by the World Food Programme in 1996.

More recently our Sudan Emergency Appeal has delivered emergency aid to more than 1.2 million families around the country as people are pushed to the brink of famine.

Helping children learn and heal through education

From building one of our first schools in Khartoum’s Mayo area in 1995 to running child-friendly spaces and psychosocial support in response to the crisis today, with the support of your donations, Islamic Relief has long championed education in Sudan.

In 1995, displaced families faced dire living conditions on the outskirts of the city, where there was a lack of basic infrastructure for children.

Building Alnasr Basic School marked the beginning of Islamic Relief’s long-term commitment to improving access to education and empowering the most vulnerable communities in Sudan.

Since then, we have built and improved hundreds of schools across Sudan, enabling thousands of children to gain an education. As part of this, thousands of crisis-affected children continued learning and psychosocial healing; and Islamic Relief also trained several school committees made up of parents and teachers.

Supporting people with disabilities

In 2021, as part of our work to ensure people with disabilities have a voice in our programmes, we analysed the needs of refugees with disabilities who had fled the conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region and were living in camps in eastern Sudan.

Working with the International Disability Alliance, two researchers with disabilities interviewed affected people and compiled a report that revealed the persistent exclusion of people with disabilities across all sectors. The report provided practical recommendations to ensure protection for the rights of people with disabilities during times of armed conflict.
