Eid al-Adha 2026

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is one of the 2 blessed Eids (occasions of celebration) that Muslims mark each year.

On Eid al-Adha we remember the sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

In remembrance of his sacrifice, and to help the poor and needy, we give our own sacrifice: qurbani.

When is Eid al-Adha 2026?

The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah 2026 are expected to begin on 18 May 2026, following the sighting of the moon.

The 9th day of Dhul Hijjah (the Day of Arafah) will be on 26 May 2026 and 10 Dhul Hijjah (Eid al Adha) will be on 27 May 2026.

As the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar calendar, the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah take place 10 days earlier each year.

How many days is Eid-al Adha?

Eid-al Adha is celebrated over 3 days.

When does Eid al-Adha end?

As the celebration lasts for 3 days, if Eid-al Adha begins at sunset on 27 May 2026, (depending on the sighting of the moon), it will end on 30 May 2026.

Sacrifice on Eid al-Adha

Following the Eid prayer on the first day of Eid al-Adha, we offer a sacrifice – qurbani – to remember the sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to Allah (SWT).

A portion of this meat (from a sheep, goat, cow or camel) then goes to help our brothers and sisters in need.

Qurbani Prices 2026

As qurbani 2026 has passed, we will add your donations towards next year's qurbani distributions. At Islamic Relief, we will aim to implement your qurbani sacrifice over the 3 days of Dhul Hijjah next year (10th, 11th and 12th).

How is Eid al-Adha celebrated?

As with any festival and important occasion, we follow the example of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

There are various sunnah acts of worship you can do on the day of Eid. Discover the sunnah acts of worship here.

Beyond performing the Eid prayer and offering qurbani, Muslims will also celebrate by wearing new clothes, visiting friends and family and preparing special dishes.

Different countries have their own traditions for marking Eid al-Adha. In Egypt, it’s common for families to visit the graves of their relatives to pass on Eid greetings, while in Pakistan, girls and women of all ages will adorn their hands with henna just before Eid begins.

In rural Yemen, local percussion instruments accompany the al-bara (a traditional dance performed by men), and in Iraq, kleicha (date-filled cookies) are prepared.

Eid prayer is an important part of the day. You can learn more about how to perform Eid prayer here.

Eid al-Adha greetings

The most universally recognised greeting on Eid al-Adha is “Eid Mubarak,” which translates to “Blessed Eid.”

In addition to “Eid Mubarak,” Muslims may also use other greetings such as “Kul ‘am wa antum bikhair” (Wishing you goodness every year), or “Eid Sa’id” (Happy Eid), each carrying a similar message of good-will and celebration.

Other greetings include, “Taqabbal Allah minna wa minkum” (May Allah accept from us and from you), and “Eidukum Mubarak, wa Taqabbal Taa’atakum” (Wishing you a blessed Eid and acceptance of your acts of worship).

When is Eid-al-Adha 2027?

Eid-al-Adha 2027 is expected to begin on the evening of Sunday 16 May 2027, and last until Thursday 20 May 2027. However, this all depends on the sighting of the new moon closer to the time.
