More than a month on from the deadly flash floods in Nepal, Islamic Relief is continuing to support affected communities.

Key stats

  • More than 1,450 people have been killed
  • Over 5,000 people are missing
  • At least 1.6 million people have been affected

What happened in Nepal?

On 26 August 2026, devastating flash floods tore along the Nepal’s northern border causing enormous, catastrophic damage in both Nepal and Tibet.

Reports suggest that the floods began after an enormous piece of glacier broke off in the Himalayas. The ice landed with such force (magnitude 5.2) that scientists initially believed there had been an earthquake.

The collapse prompted a wave of water, mud and debris to sweep through the valleys of the Lhende Khola, Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.

Homes, bridges and markets were swept away in seconds by what eyewitnesses described as a 30-metre (100 foot) wall of water and debris.

Families in the worst affected districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot lost their homes and livelihoods in an instant. Bridges and power networks were heavily damaged or blocked by rubble, complicating efforts to reach survivors in remote areas.

What is the situation now?

More than a month on from the floods, and Nepal is in a humanitarian crisis.

More rainfall in September has further worsened conditions for displaced families in the worst affected districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Temporary shelters have been damaged, leaving already vulnerable families exposed to the elements.

Northern Nepal is now experiencing critical food shortages as emergency food rations run out. Damaged farmland and ruined livelihoods mean that the growing hunger crisis is likely to last well into 2027.

As of 1 October, at least 1,450 people are now confirmed to have been killed by the floods. More than 5,000 people are missing and unaccounted for.

What is Islamic Relief doing to help people affected by the flooding in Nepal?

Islamic Relief began distributing emergency shelter kits in the districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot mere days after the disaster.

Each shelter kit includes essential items such as tarpaulins, blankets, pillows, and foam mattresses to help families meet their immediate needs.

We have so far reached more than 3,300 families with vital humanitarian assistance.

Islamic Relief has also developed a 3-year plan to support displaced families with transitional shelters, durable housing, livelihood support while also rehabilitating important water and sanitation services.

“The flood-affected families we meet are facing an uncertain future. Having lost their homes and sources of income, they do not know how they will rebuild their lives.” Golam Motasim Billah, Islamic Relief Nepal Country Director, says.

“As winter approaches, they fear for their survival without adequate shelter, warm clothing, and basic necessities, especially for children and elderly who remain the most vulnerable,”

Islamic Relief has been working in Nepal for over a decade after first responding to the 2015 Gorkha earthquake and has a strong network of partnerships with local organisations in the country.

Tens of thousands of people have been left with nothing. Please help us to ease their suffering and provide lifesaving support following this devastating disaster now. Donate to our Nepal Floods Emergency Appeal now.
