Where we work

Indonesia

Indonesia is highly vulnerable to disasters which can rob families of their lives and livelihoods in seconds.

Islamic Relief began working in Indonesia in 2000. Just 4 years later, we responded to one of the deadliest disasters in recorded history, the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 150,000 people in Indonesia alone.

In 2024, we marked the 20th anniversary of the disaster by celebrating the resilience of survivors and highlighting Islamic Relief’s ongoing work in Indonesia.

Working across 5 provinces, we today provide a lifeline to people in their time of greatest need through our emergency response efforts. In the aftermath of a disaster, Islamic Relief provides food and water, shelter and emergency healthcare.

We stay by the side of communities long after the disaster has passed, helping them to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

While our disaster risk reduction (DRR) work helps local authorities, communities and individuals to be better prepared for the next disaster.

Indonesia is highly susceptible to the negative effects of climate change, and we work with communities to help them adapt to the challenges of the changing climate.
